South Sudan President Salva Kiir rushed to hospital in Ethiopia

South Sudan's President Salva Kiir was Wednesday rushed to hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia after he fell sick.

The BBC reports that according to an official, Kiir suffered from nose bleeds but further details of his condition were not immediately available.

His hospitalisation delayed an IGAD summit where regional leaders were called to thoroughly and conclusively deal with the issue of the South Sudan conflict.

According to the Sudan Tribune, Kiir was taken ill on Wednesday night and his situation has not improved since.

IGAD officials told Sudan Tribune that if Kiir’s condition does not improve by Thursday, the leaders summit may have to be postponed indefinitely.

The meeting was to be attended by, among others, Presidents Uhuru Kenyatta, Yoweri Museveni (Uganda) and Ethiopian prime minister and IGAD chairperson Hailemariam Desalegn.

The IGAD meeting would then be followed by a two-day African Union (AU) summit which is expected to start on Friday.

Kiir held talks in Addis Ababa on Wednesday with rebel leader Riek Machar to end the civil war which has killed thousands of people since December 2013.

Last week, Kiir and Machar signed a re-unification agreement to resolve the 13-month conflict in the country that gained independence in 2011. The pact was overseen by Tanzania's President Jakaya Kikwete.
