Celeb's best, worst memorable Christmas

Kalekye Mumo

Christmas evokes different memories for different people - stories of joy, unexpected reunions, idyllic settings and generous gifts.

Sadly, you also hear stories of deep hurt, poverty, family breakups and even death.

Even celebrities have that special Christmas experience that lingers in their minds for one reason or the other.

The Nairobian caught up with a few celebs to share their most memorable Christmas.

Eric Omondi (Comedian)

It was in 1997. My aunt who is married to a German came home with her husband. They brought us bicycles and shoes which were popularly known as reeboks. What amused us was the fact that those shoes had lights on the sole.

They would flicker when it was dark. All the children in the village came to our house and asked my Caucasian uncle to give them money. This was the closest we had gotten to a white man other than what we saw on TV.

Roughtone (Musician)

My most memorable Christmas was in 2006. The whole family got together and we visited children at the cancer ward in Kenyatta National hospital. After that we went home and made our own Nyama choma which sadly saw us go back to the same hospital for treatment this time. The doctor said that we suffered food poisoning. To cut the long story short, that was the last time we made our own Nyama choma.

Innocent Mutiso (Gor Mahia Footballer)

That must have been in 2012. A fan I had been chatting with on Facebook invited me to Mombasa. Earlier on he told me that I was very famous in Kilifi but I thought that he was joking. When I got there I found that everyone was really anxious to meet me and they even slaughtered a duck and a goat for me.

I stayed there for a week. At one point we even organised for a friendly football match at Kilifi. I was flattered when I saw one of the young men in an arsenal Jersey with my name on the back. I sent them more Jerseys when I cam e back to Nairobi.

Wahu Kagwe (Musician)

I don't have one particular memorable Christmas since all of them were epic. Christmas meant waking up to the smell of bacon and Weetabix. It also meant that I would meet my cousins, travel upcountry where our fathers would slaughter and roast nyama choma as we played. Christmas was one of the few days of the year that I looked forward to because we always got new clothes.

Gor Semelango (Business Man)

In 2012 I spent my Christmas party with orphans. I must admit that I enjoyed much more because I was with people who appreciated Christmas. For an average Kenyan this is not a big deal however these children seemed happier .It was fulfilling.

Lady B (Gospel Musician)

2013 was my most memorable Christmas. I had just seen the light. This was the first time I celebrated Christmas with a purpose. I even went to church. In the past, Christmas was a perfect excuse to get high and eat. But for the first time I was celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ.

Kalekye Mumo (Radio presenter)

That was in 2013. I hosted my family in my house for the first time. I was quite nervous because my mother had been hosting us for a very long time. She also happens to a perfectionist. Things turned out well and they even left my house the next day at 4am. My brother, who is hosting us this year, is quite nervous since he claims that I set the bar quite high!

Lizz Njagah (Actress)

I was in Greece with husband in 2012. Christmas there, is celebrated from December to mid-January. I got to sample all types of foods. This was a perfect excuse to eat as much as I could.
