Three killed in Gilgil road crash

Naivasha, Kenya: Three people died and three others were left fighting for their lives following a grisly road accident involving two vehicles along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

The two personal vehicles collided head on near Diatomite village in Gilgil at around 7am with the three male occupants dying on the spot.

Transport along the busy highway was temporarily disrupted as police moved in to clear the wreckages that had blocked the busy road.

According to a witness John Mwangi, one of the drivers who was heading to Nakuru from Nairobi was trying to overtake when he rammed into the oncoming vehicle.

Mwangi said that the vehicle which had four occupants was speeding, adding that the driver was overtaking a fleet of vehicles when the accident occurred.

"The driver had just overtaken some vehicles when he rammed into the oncoming vehicle that was travelling in the opposite direction," he said.

He added that three people died on the spot while three others were rushed to the nearby St Mary's Mission hospital in critical condition.

Rift Valley Traffic boss Mary Omari confirmed the incident and blamed speeding for the accident.

She added that among those were injured were the drivers of both vehicles who were admitted in hospital in critical condition.

Omari said they had intensified patrols along major roads in the region targeting speeding drivers and defective motor vehicles.

The accident occurred less than two kilometers from the scene of last week’s incident where seven family members died after their Nissan matatu was involved in an accident.

The accident happened near Kikopey trading center after a matatu they were travelling in was involved in a head on collision with a Canter.
