Visitors to Masai Mara Game Reserve advised to notify police

Kenya: Local and foreign tourists visiting Masai Mara Game Reserve during the Christmas and New Year holidays have been advised to notify Narok police.

Police chief Paul Letting said the arrangement is meant to provide adequate security following the recent spate of terror activities in the country.

Mr Leting said a large number of security personnel will be stationed in all entry points to the reserve and hotels.

Patrols along the Narok-Sekenani and Narok-Mara River roads will also be intensified, while escort vehicles will accompany the visitors to their destinations.

"All tour operators should also adhere to the requirement, which is meant assist us in enhancing security for the visitors. We want to ensure the holidays go without any security hitch," he said yesterday.

Leting warned that motorists using Mai Mahiu-Bomet road who will be driving beyond the mandatory speed limits will be arrested.

"We will deploy speed guns along that part of the highway. Those who will be caught driving beyond 70 kilometres per hour will be arrested and taken to court," Letting told reporters during a media briefing in his office.

Alcoblow, he said, will be used to detect drivers who will be driving while drunk.

All security personnel who were on leave, he added, have been recalled to bolster security in the area.

Most hotels in Mara have recalled all their staff in readiness for the festivities from this weekend. "We have made elaborate plans to ensure visitors enjoy their stay," said Steve Nzuki, the General Manager, Mara Intrepids.
