Nurses threaten to strike over SRC report

Nurses have threatened to go on strike should the Government adopt the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) report that seeks to harmonise allowances for civil servants and other State officers.

The SRC recently released its final report, which proposed removal of extraneous allowances to reduce the country’s growing wage bill, a move that has already been opposed by teachers.

The Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) dismissed the recommendations and threatened to call for a nationwide strike to compel the commission to reconsider their stand. “The actions of SRC will be met with fireworks should it be adopted. This country will have the worst industrial action that has never been witnessed before,’’ said Maurice Opetu (pictured), KNUN’s deputy secretary general.

Addressing a press conference in Kisumu yesterday, the officials accused SRC of plotting to “impoverish” nurses, claimimg that once the allowance is taken away, they will be unable to feed their families.

While urging the Government to concentrate on officers earning huge salaries to reduce the wage bill, the leaders said they are not ready to cede “even an inch” to the commission. The Government has in recent months taken radical measures to reduce public spending.
