Nine Kenyans returning from Liberia test negative for Ebola

Nairobi, Kenya: The blood samples taken from nine Kenyans who returned from Liberia Tuesday night tested negative for Ebola and Marburg after five hours of testing, Health Cabinet Secretary James Macharia has said.

The returnees, five adults and four children, had stayed in the Ebola hit country for a period of between 1 to four years.

Upon arrival at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), they were screened and temporarily quarantined overnight pending results from the samples that had been taken to KEMRI.

In a press statement sent to newsrooms Wednesday, the cabinet secretary said the health ministry had taken phone numbers and physical addresses of the returnees and they will be monitored for the next 21 days.

‘’The families have also been given information on symptoms and signs of Ebola and have been requested to report immediately should they start to feel unwell. The returnees have further been advised to self-quarantine at home’’, part of the statement read.

Macharia further said a follow up will be made by Ministry of Foreign Affairs to track the remaining Kenyans in Liberia and Sierra Leone.
