Reporting date for police recruits postponed, says Police Commission

NAIROBI, KENYA: Police recruits will have to wait longer before reporting to respective training colleges.

On Tuesday, Police Commission said reporting date for all police recruits has been postponed indefinitely.

The 10,000 recruits were supposed to report on Friday, October 3 at the Kiganjo Police College and Embakasi AP College but the National Police Service Commission announced the new date will be announced later.

"The National Police Service Commission informs the general public and all persons recruited on July 14, 2014 and who were scheduled to report to various Police training colleges on October 3 that the reporting date has been postponed until further orders and directions from the court," said the commission chairman Johnston Kavuludi.

He said decision was as a result of a case filed at the High Court by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority challenging the legality of the recruitment process.

This means that all the recruits who had been waiting to report on Friday will have to wait for long. A case filed by IPOA on the exercise is still pending in court.

Kavuludi said given that the parties concerned were still submitting their issues at the court, it was proper for them to postpone the reporting dates.

IPOA moved to court seeking to nullify the recently concluded recruitment of 10,000 police recruits.

Chairman Macharia Njeru said they had filed a case in the High Court.

"The exercise was marred by maleficent irregularities, was conducted in a manner that was not in compliance with the constitution and hence led to the great hue and cry from members of the public and aggrieved participants," said Njeru.
