Add a touch of class to your bedroom with the dreamy bed canopies

Living

Bedrooms should be decorated in calm and soothing tones that enhance a good night’s sleep.

Four-poster bed canopies are popular and there are simple and creative options that can be explored to create an open, airy yet dramatic effect especially for those who are claustrophobic.

Curtain box canopy

At a centred position above the bed, install a wooden curtain box that is about one metre in length and five inches wide on the ceiling board or slab.

Install a curtain rail inside the curtain box to allow you to hang fabric that will flow behind the head of the bed as a backdrop. This will leave the front part of the bed exposed to air and sunlight.

For an elegant effect, let the ends of the fabric drape over the posters of the bed and flow to the floor.

Valanced canopy

If a curtain box is not your style, then install three curtain rails in a semi-circle at a centered position on the ceiling above the head of the bed.

Layer the fabrics by hanging a three inch valance on the outer rail.

The fabric hanging from the middle rail should be double the length of the first one.

Hang the longest fabric from the inner rail so that it can drape over the bed posters and onto the floor.

The aim of using a valance is to allow the aesthetic gathers to conceal the curtain rail and to let the canopy create a focal point.

Wrought Iron

Attach an artistically curved rail of wrought iron above the headboard and about five inches below the ceiling - use hooks to attach the fabric.

The fabric will then flow to the floor supported by the bed posters or matching wrought iron tie-back holders.

Select a fabric that will match the décor in the room and which drapes easily. Using light fabric sheers or organza will help to catch the light and create a romantic mood.

Child’s room

If decorating a child’s room, select whimsical colours to breathe playfulness into the space.

De-clutter the bedroom to make it more restful and orderly and remove stimulants such as televisions, laptops and play stations to enhance restful sleep.
