Mombasa strikes Sh600m shops deal with investors

Mombasa County has signed a memorandum of understanding with investors to put up 3,000 modern kiosks worth Sh600 million for hawkers.

The department of trade, investment, energy and industry, executive secretary Mohamed Ibrahim Abdi said the move would stop the hawking problem and ensure traders pays rates to the county.

He said the initiative would solve the perennial hawking menace in Mombasa tow for the last few years.

He said the county government would put up the modern kiosks along Mbaraki road, Mwembe Tayari and other potential areas within the Central Business District.

“The county government will put up public toilets, street lights and other public facilities along the designated areas,” he said. He said the Kenyans to occupy the kiosks must be registered and be able to pay the rent to Mombasa County government. “The deal will benefit the small and medium-size companies to conduct business and be protected by the county government,” he said. He said a survey has been done and the modern kiosks will have all public facilities and ensure safety, roads, street lighting and other facilities.

“The modern kiosks will be operational in the next few months and must have all the modern facilities to do business in Mombasa,” he said. The chairman of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mombasa County, James Mureu said the move would create order in Mombasa.
