Man found slaughtering dog in Naivasha jailed for two years

NAIVASHA, KENYA: A man found slaughtering a dog in Naivasha has been sentenced to two years in jail by a Naivasha court.
Dickson Agweya Munala was sent to Naivasha G.K prison to begin his term hours after he pleaded guilty to the charge of slaughtering the dog.

Naivasha Senior Principal Magistrate Peter Gesora termed the offence serious adding that deterrent measures were needed to deter other people from engaging into the same act.

The magistrate expressed concern over the rising cases of dog slaughter in Naivasha adding that the harsh jail term would serve as a lesson to others.

The father of two had been charged that on August 5, 2014 near Kihoto estate he was found in possession of the carcass of a dog which was not fit for human consumption.

The suspect who was unrepresented pleaded guilty before a packed court claiming that he thought the animal was a goat.
The accused who sells firewood told the hushed court that the animal was run over by a train making it hard to know if it was a dog or a goat.

The magistrate could hear none of this and sent him to jail without an option of a fine while reminding him of his 14 days right of appeal.

Munala becomes the second person to be sentenced to jail in Naivasha after another suspect was jailed for three months last week for a similar offence.

Last week, Anthony Nuthu was sent to prison after he was nabbed near the same estate slaughtering a dog.
