16-year-old girl kills brother over ‘funeral disco’

Kakamega, Kenya:  A family feud turned tragic at Mukuyuni village in Bungoma County when a 16-year-old girl stabbed her elder brother to death after he barred her from attending a “Disco Matanga” on Tuesday night.

Margaret Wanzala, their mother, told The Standard that her 22-year-old son was stabbed by his sister in his abdomen and chest using a kitchen knife.

“We had just finished supper when I noticed that my daughter was restless. I asked her what was wrong and she said she wanted to attend a funeral dance in the neighbourhood but I refused telling her to study. She was rude towards me telling me she would attend the function whether or not I liked it. Her brother was offended by her remarks and he told her to respect me as their mother,” Wanzala said.

She said this led to a heated argument, which culminated into a physical struggle and in a bid to separate the two, Wanzala told her son to go study in his room.

“His sister followed him to the room, insulting him loudly and he came out with a cane intent on beating her. I was in my room when I heard a loud scream coming from the kitchen and when I dashed there, I found my son on the floor covered in blood,” she said.

The suspect is said to have fled, when she realised her brother was dead, and is still at large.

Confirming the incident, Bungoma North OCPD Eliud Okello said a search for the girl is on and investigations are also underway.
