Kenya enters Sh60b deal to improve electricity access

NAIROBI, KENYA: Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has unveiled new plans to expand the country's electricity access and reduce power supply interruptions in the next 5years.

The CS said Kenya is negotiating a Sh60 billion loan from African Development Bank (ADB) to finance this ambitious plan and expand electricity access from the current 32per cent to 70.

Chirchir said the negotiations are at an advanced stage, with the deal expected to be completed by December this year to pave way for Sh12 billion first tranche of the loan to be disbursed this financial year.

Chirchir said the money will be used to take electricity closer to potential users and increase number of  customers from the current 2.8 million to approximately 8 million in five years.
