Murderer who spent five days with his victim's corpse is jailed for life

A boyfriend who killed his partner and stayed in the house with her body for five days has been jailed for life. Andrew McKinlay, 39, was told he will serve at least 15 years behind bars after admitting murdering mum-of-three Josephine Steele in her home in October last year.
Five days after killing her, McKinlay went to a shop to buy air freshener and a bottle of bleach.
He then moved to a friend’s flat, leaving her body undiscovered in her home in Glasgow’s east end for two more weeks, the Daily Record reports.
They had only known each other for a short time after Josephine, 45, allowed McKinlay to stay in her flat when he was about to be made homeless.
Before sentencing, Thomas Ross, defending, told judge Kenneth Maciver: “He cannot believe it himself, what he did”.
McKinlay had been drinking and had taken medication for flu along with Valium and cannabis before the attack, the High Court in Glasgow heard.
The judge told McKinlay: “This was a brutal killing. Although it was a short relationship, she loved and trusted you and she was entitled to feel safe and secure in her own home.
“It is clear you attacked her in a drug and drink fuelled rage. The attack with a weapon was relentless.
“Your actions and conduct were callous and shameful, because you went on, as if nothing had happened.”
Members of Josephine’s family, who were in court for the sentencing, were too distressed to comment.
