CECAFA Kagame Cup: Gor Mahia drawn in pool B

Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia have been drawn in pool B of the 2014 Cecafa Kagame Cup to be held in Rwanda on August 8-24.

In a draw conducted on Friday at the Rwanda Football Federation (Ferwafa) headquarters in Kigali, K'ogalo will battle with last year's finalists APR (Rwanda), Djibouti's Telecom and Flambeau of Burundi as defending champions Vital'O of Burundi lock horns with Allan Wanga’s El Merreikh (Sudan), Police (Rwanda) and Benadeir (Somalia) in Pool C.

Pool A comprises of Rayon Sport (Rwanda), Yanga (Tanzania), Coffee (Ethiopia), Atlbara (South Sudan) and KMKM (Zanzibar).

In an interview with Feverpitch after the draws, Cecafa Secretary General Nicholas Musonye said Ferwafa in conjunction with the Rwandese government are committed to hosting a successful tournament.

“We are very impressed with the organization and the planning of the tournament. We were with SuperSport, the official tournament broadcaster, in Kigali to evaluate the ground and the TV set-up. As far as I am concerned, the preparations for the event are in top gear,” said Musonye.

“For the first time in history, fourteen teams will be competing in the tournament and from the interest shown by the Rwandese sponsors and foreign teams we are looking forward to a successful tournament.”

Musonye further revealed that the regional body is contemplating to start a Cecafa Champions League. “With the type of sponsorship and the rise in competition in the region, we are planning to start our own Champions League,” said Musonye.

Apart from the trophy, the winners of the 40th edition will get USD 30,000 in prize money with the first and second runners-up receiving USD 20,000 and USD 10,000 respectively.

The tournament will be staged at Amahoro and Nyamirambo Stadium.
