County starts kitty for Mara

Narok, Kenya: The County Government of Narok has launched a multi-billion fund that will ensure a fixed percentage of revenue collected from the Masai Mara Game Reserve is ploughed back to the community around the reserve.

The Masai Mara Community Development Support Fund will allow the community around the Eighth wonder of the world to be allocated 19 per cent of the annual revenue collected from the game reserve.

Governor Samuel Tunai said the allocation was informed by the fact that the community does not engage in any other economic activity, despite bearing the brunt of human-wildlife conflict.

"We want to empower this community as a way of reducing human-wildlife conflict, promote conservation of wildlife and stop poaching," said Tunai.
