A police officer was shot dead and two members of the public he had tried to help injured in Ngong.

Gangsters killed the officer as he tried to pursue them after the gang attacked and robbed motorists on Tuesday night.

Nairobi PPO Anthony Kibuchi said the officer was in the company of his colleague manning a roadblock when a vehicle stopped and the occupants told the officers a car ahead of them was carrying armed men who had attacked them.

The two officers jumped into the vehicle and gave chase, which lasted less than two minutes before the gunmen’s car stopped abruptly and the occupants opened fire, killing the officer on the spot and injuring a woman and a man who were in the car.

Separately, police killed a highway robber who had carjacked a bus and robbed passengers in Mtito Andei.

Highway Patrol unit boss Munga Nyale said the gangster was among three others who escaped on foot, but with bullet injuries.

Meanwhile, police in Rachuonyo South District have gunned down a suspected gangster who was terrorising motorists on the Oyugis-Kisii road. They also recovered an AK-47 rifle and three bullets on the suspect.

OCPD David Ngetich said police on patrol found the suspect robbing passengers at gunpoint.

In Mariakani, a traffic police officer shot dead a driver after he refused to stop at a police roadblock.

Kilifi acting OCPD Lucas Ogara said the officer, who is being held at Mariakani Police Station, pursued the lorry driver in a private car before he shot him at Maji ya Chumvi on Tuesday evening.

Kenya’s economy is on a positive growth trajectory. That is the judgment from leading fund management firms, investment banks, economists and the World Bank. Although the estimated GDP growth of between 3-4 per cent is still below the country’s potential, when benchmarked against competing economies in East Africa, the economy is expected to make a strong recovery this year.
