Three members sought the protection of the Chair, saying their lives were in danger.Imenti Central MP Gitobu Imanyara sparked off the matter when he moved the House into silence as he narrated how his personal assistant had received a message on Monday that his stalkers were closing in on him.

According to Mr Imanyara, the text message warned the PA to stop associating with him because his days were numbered.

"Mr Speaker the text message threatened my PA that he was a young man who should stop associating with me because I am responsible for messing up the politics of Mt Kenya and that my days are numbered," he added

Nothing done

Internal Security Minister George Saitoti was put on the spot by members for ignoring the pleas of members by not taking the security matter seriously.

"Mr Speaker does Saitoti want to see another member chairing a probe committee to investigate the killing of another member so that he can begin investigations like is about to happen to Imanyara or what?" posed Ikolomani MP Bonny Khalwale.

Gichugu MP Martha Karua told the House when she raised her security concerns and threats on her life a couple of months ago, the minister promised to enhance her security but to date nothing had been done.

Imanyara said his personal assistant, who hails from Karua’s constituency, was travelling in a matatu when he received the message.

Imanyara said his aide then called and alerted him that he feared for his life following the threat.

"Mr Speaker, I asked him to forward me the message and alight from the matatu and take a taxi to my office," added Imanyara.

The MP further told an attentive House that when his aide arrived they sought audience with Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere who referred them to the Director of CID.

Imanyara said they recorded a statement at the CID headquarters on the matter. The officers promised to start investigation.

Imanyara further said he later received close to seven calls from anonymous people who further threatened him.

"But Mr Speaker, when I called today to find out whether the police had traced those who had sent the messages, nothing had been done as the officers told me they were yet to send a letter to Zain," he added.

Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim said the Chair takes very seriously the security of members adding that the primary responsibility for any Government is security of its citizens and their property.

Maalim told Saitoti to explain whether he had ignored the directive by the Chair to enhance security to members who had expressed fears on their lives.

Embakasi MP Ferdinand Waititu ,who also expressed fears on his life, said the Kwekwe squad was still in place and three weeks ago executed three men from his constituency.

"Mr Speaker, why can’t this Government realise that this style of executing people particularly in Central Province cannot work?" he asked.

Saitoti said he took the mater seriously and would summon the Police Commissioner to find out why the directive to enhance security of members had not been adhered to.
