Meru elders ban FGM
by Osinde Obare
Thousands of girls in Pokot are set to undergo FGM during December holidays unless the Provincial Administration makes good its warning of dire consequences.
Parents in West Pokot, Pokot North and Pokot Central have engaged circumcisers to operate their daughters when schools close. Sources said some parents have bribed local chiefs to allow the outlawed rite.
But Pokot North DC Joseph Motari said he has stepped up anti-FGM and child marriage campaigns.
Mr Motari said a surveillance team comprising chiefs and Administration Police to monitor and curtail such plans had been established.
He said the fight against the vices would continue until parents realised the importance of education.
Pokot Central DC Jeremiah Were warned of stern action against administrators condoning the vice.
