Kisumu Rugby Football Club and Mwamba from Nairobi made a flying start to the first leg of the Western Union National Sevens Circuit tournament that kicked off at Kisumu Polytechnic.
Kisumu, enjoying home ground support and a partisan crowd, did not have mercy for visiting JKUAT whom they thrashed 25-5 in their opening match, on Saturday.
Match maker Peter Okong’o and Elvin Okong’o touched down for the winners before Emmanuel Abungu made the conversions for Kisumu.
The emphatic victory by Kisumu definitely sounded a warning to teams featuring in the two-day competition.
Mwamba did not parade their internationals including Kanyange siblings Humphrey and Collins and Lavin Asego.
However, they summoned courage and went ahead to thrash their opponents, Masinde Muliro University, 28-5 in their first match.
Made two tries
George Mbaye made two tries and Steve Sewe made the conversion, while Fabian Olando touched down for the students.
Mwamba were awarded their second match against Siaya Medical Training Institute without kicking a ball after the students failed to honour the fixture.
Kenya Commercial Bank, another top club in the championship, showed their intentions of winning the title by running over Daystar University 43-7 in their opening encounter.
National circuit
Sebastian Shivokha and Brian Omondi made two tries each that were converted by Collins Kimani and Dedan Omondi.
Kevin Mwaura netted a try for the losers and Martin Juma converted it.
In another match, Mean Machine terrorised Egerton University by thrashing them 28-0, Harlequins beat Bungoma 43-12 while Nakuru were awarded their match against Moi University after the latter failed to show up at the venue.
Other results include, Blakbad 0 MMUST 14, Daystar 24 JKUAT 7, Kisumu Two 14 Moi University 0, KCB 24 Kisumu 7, Nakuru 29, Flames 7, Impala 12 Mombasa Polytechnic 17 and Nondies 22 Maseno University 0.
