Nairobi Metropolitan Development Minister Robinson Githae has defended those who have declared their presidential ambitions.

The minister said the leaders have a democratic right to further their ambitions and they should not be bashed for what their critics dismiss as premature campaigns.

Mr Githae said there was nothing wrong about making one’s motives known, adding campaign for the top seat kicked off soon after the announcement of the December 2007 General Election results.

He said: "Campaigns in every country start soon after election results are announced and there is no cause for alarm."

The minister was speaking in Machakos town where he launched the Nairobi Metropolitan Development monthly clean-up week.

The Hague

His PS Philip Sika, Machakos Mayor Fidelis Kimuyu and Town Clerk Stephen Mbondo accompanied him.

Githae condemned political violence and said those who planned and financed election violence should face justice at The Hague.

He said their trial at the International Criminal Court would serve as warning to others in addition to ending impunity.

The minister, however, said there is need to establish a local tribunal to try those who killed, maimed and raped.

Githae renewed his call that PNU affiliate parties be merged to form a solid political party like Prime Minister Raila Odinga led Orange Democratic Movement, adding there should only be two strong political parties.

Service delivery

He said his ministry has already recommended that every district becomes a constituency and a local authority.

"We want a situation whereby MP, DC and local authority chairmen are in one unit to enhance service delivery," said Githae.
