The Release Political Prisoners (RPP) is deeply troubled by the extra-judicial killings that appear to have resurfaced one again.
This comes after the bizarre murder of Njuguna Gitau, the Kenya National Youth Alliance spokesperson, and there seems to be an ulterior motive in what is emerging as a massive crackdown on Mungiki.
RPP has remained firm that extra-judicial killings are not the solution to the problems of insecurity, sects, poverty, unemployment, militia groups and crime.
The announcement by Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere that police will pursue criminals, who are now being seen through the eyes of Mungiki, should be interrogated and analysed carefully by wananchi.
While we recognise and appreciate the difficult situations policemen face in their work, we are concerned about this nation’s future if extra-judicial killings become the acceptable way of dealing with crime and criminals.
The suffering and anguish that the suspects’ families face will traumatise them for years, not forgetting the numerous children rendered orphans.
Extra-judicial killings have not borne any fruits apart from leaving the society shocked, depressed and with more questions than answers. The desired results have always been a security mirage.
Historically, we ought to have learnt that political, social-economic and cultural problems have never been solved through violence or unlawful killings, but through proper leadership that is able to unearth and solve people’s problems with sobriety.
Central kenya
RPP calls upon MPs, especially those from Central Kenya, and across the political divide to be bold and show the youth the way. This especially so for those who are said to be Mungiki followers.
From the words of Starehe MP Margaret Wanjiru, it appears many of them know what is happening but they are not willing to lead the process of finding a solution to the problem.
When the police kill suspects, then they can’t interrogate them for much-needed information that could stop other criminal acts from being perpetrated.
Shoot- to-kill orders have never been the solution. The police should change tactics and embrace all stakeholders to work together and secure the country’s future.
