Piling problems on residents

Many Kenyans, PointBlank believes, are already facing heaps of problems with the shilling hard to come by, soaring unemployment and decibel upon decibel of political noise. But Evelyn, a resident of Golden Gate Estate in South B, Nairobi, did not expect misery to be dumped on her doorstep, literally.

Evelyn says on Monday she and her neighbours woke up to find heaps of black soil in front of their houses, supposedly poured by a contractor working on a road in the estate near the Mosque (see picture).

This, she explains, locked out those who were outside from accessing their houses and prevented those who were indoors from leaving. But what makes the situation dire is the contractor’s attitude: She alleges he thinks residents are making a mountain out of an anthill.

"The contractor argues that the soil can only be removed when road construction is complete," she claims.

Unable to bear the mountain of inconvenience, Evelyn wants City Council Town Clerk Philip Kisia and Roads Minister Franklin Bett to pile pressure on the contractor to remove the soil and find somewhere else to heap it.
