All victims of post-election mayhem will be mobilised to meet International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo when he comes to Kenya.

The internally displaced persons (IDPs) would seek to meet Moreno-Ocampo to press for the prosecution of President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga over the chaos.

The civil society that organised a meeting to discuss the IDPs’ message to Moreno-Ocampo said they would reach out to all IDPs and other victims to prepare them to meet the ICC.

Ghai: Consider local tribunal

Prof Yash Pal Ghai, the former chairman of Bomas Constitutional Review Conference, was among those who addressed participants at a Nairobi hotel.

Local court

Ghai said as Moreno-Ocampo prepares to prosecute the perpetrators of post-election violence at The Hague, Kenyans should also be willing to support establishment of a local special tribunal to try the minor offenders.

He said the Imanyara Bill should be supported once tabled in Parliament but advocated amendments to ensure no Kenyan judges took part.

The International Centre for Policy and Conflict Director Ndung’u Wainaina and Human Rights lawyer Harun Ndubi said Moreno-Ocampo should not expect total co-operation from the coalition Government.

"Ocampo should know the two leaders have their friends in the Waki list and there are chances they will seek extension of time to shield their buddies," said Ndubi.
