The Government spent Sh70 million on survey of Migingo Island in Lake Victoria.
Internal Security PS Francis Kimemia told a parliamentary watchdog committee that claims Sh280 million was spent were not true. He revealed the survey funds had been sourced from his ministry and channelled to that of Lands.
Mr Kimemia was answering questions from members of the Parliamentary Accounts Committee during a session chaired by Mwala MP Daniel Muoki. He told the committee the island was in Kenya, adding Uganda was claiming its ownership due to its strategic position.
"They want the island as a landing bay for their boats," said Kimemia.
Island ownership
On Wednesday, Nyatike MP Edick Anyanga challenged Kimemia to state the Government position on the ownership of the island.
"The Kenyan survey team finished their survey and concluded the island is Kenyan territory," said Kimemia.
He said boundaries drawn by the colonial government had also shown the island belonged to Kenya.
