Fishermen protest alleged beatings by Uganda police

The Ugandan police officer who beat up and injured a Kenyan fisherman in Migingo is scheduled to leave the island on Wednesday.
This was decided after a daylong meeting between local fishermen and Ugandan Police, led by Senior Superintendent of Police Bernard Kangasa held on the island at the weekend.
Speaking soon after the meeting, Beach Management Unit Chairman Juma Ombori said Ugandan officials had accepted to withdraw the officer from the island.
"They have promised to send him back to Bugiri," Mr Ombori said, adding the officer, whose name was only given as Hajasu, was to be taken back by the boat that brings supplies to the officers every Wednesday.
But Migori DC Julius Mutula told The Standard he was yet to get information on the move to withdraw the police officer from the island.
However, fishermen are insisting that the withdrawal of the officer is not enough and that justice must be done.
Similar cases A fisherman based on the island said it is unacceptable that Ugandan officers who beat up Kenyans are only withdrawn, saying it was time they were made to account for the ills they were committing on the island. "There have been at least five similar cases where officers are simply transferred," said the fisherman, adding this was encouraging police to mistreat Kenyans knowing there would be no repercussions. Meanwhile, Mr Ben Bunde, the fisherman at the heart of the conflict is recuperating at St Camillus Hospital in Karungu.
