The Government has received a Sh4.2 billion grant from the World Bank to finance environmental conservation.

The grant, given through the Lake Victoria Basin Commission, will fund projects under the phase two of the Lake Victoria Environmental Management Programme.

National focal point officer Richard Sigei said the eight-year project would be implemented in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi.

The conservation project is expected to start this month, with a budget of Sh17.7 billion.

Speaking in Kericho after leading six MPs from the East African Legislative Assembly on a tour of environmental projects in Ainamoi, Mr Sigei said part of the funds are loans.

The MPs, who are members of the departmental committee on Environment, agriculture and tourism, were led by their chairman George Nangale, and toured Motoshet and Ogirgir water projects in Kapsoit.

Members of the committee included Augustine Lotodo (Kenya), Issa Ngendakumana (Burundi), Lwanyantika Masha (Tanzania), Mike Sebalu and Dan Kidenga both representing Uganda.

Sigei said: "The phase two of LVEMP project will be launched this month in all the five member states of the East African Community".
