A history of terrorist attacks

Published on 07/10/2009

Kenya has had a long and bloody relationship with terrorists dating back to 1980 when Norfolk Hotel was hit by a bomb blamed on Palestinian Liberation Organisation during which 16 people died.

The most devastating attack however came on August 7, 1998 when two pickups loaded with explosives were driven into the US Embassy in Nairobi resulting in the deaths of 254 people.

A year later in 1999, Kenya was on the news again after a suspected terrorist, Abdullah Ocalan, the leader of the Turkish Workers Party, PKK was arrested in Nairobi and extradited to Turkey.

In November 2001, there was outrage in Mombasa after an estimated 50 people were arrested on suspicions that they had connections with terrorism.

Kenya was yet again shocked when suicide bombers struck, this time in Mombasa on November 28, 2002 targeting an Israeli owned hotel in Kikambala. Three Israeli tourists and 10 Kenyans perished during the tragedy.

A rocket fired at an Israeli plane landing at Moi International Airport, Mombasa on the same day missed its target.

In 2003, British intelligence circulated reports that there were planned attacks by terrorists against some European interests in Kenya.

In 2003, a terrorist blew himself up near Central Police Station, Mombasa killing himself and a police officer.
