CCK directs operators to register subscribers

Published on 03/10/2009

The Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) has issued a notice to mobile phone operators to register subscribers on their networks.

The move follows a presidential directive to curb crimes perpetrated using mobile telephone services.

"While mobile communication has positively revolutionised the society, the cellular mobile services have brought with them numerous challenges," noted the statement signed by Director General Charles Njoroge.

"There has been a rise in the number of incidences where this technology has been used to perpetrate crime, which include widespread threats posed by terrorism, money laundering, hate messages and incitement."
