The Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) national Odhiambo Ogol Tournament women’s final match between Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) and Prisons was abandoned due to heavy downpour in Kisumu.
However, KVF Nyanza branch treasurer Patrick Kaliwa blamed the abandonment on disagreement between referee Geoffrey Lengurai and his assistant, over perceived wrong call-ups.
The match was called off in the fifth set KCB and Prisons were tying on 11 points.
KCB had won the first set 25-20, before stumbling 22-25 in the second. They won the third 25-23 before losing 25-22 in the fourth, leading to 11-11 tie in the fifth.
In another incident in the same tournament, the men’s final match between General Service Unit (GSU) and Prisons aborted due to fading lights.
KVF national organising secretary Walter Otieno said the finals would be played at a later date in venues to be announced.
Earlier, GSU walloped Homegrown 3-0 in the semi-final, while Prisons hit Telkom Orange by a similar margin. Orange and GSU qualified for the semis after trouncing Jacaranda and Posta 3-0 and 3-1.
In the women’s category, KCB hammered Stima Nyeri 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-17) in the semis as Prisons edged out Kenya Pipeline Company 3-1.
In schools and colleges category, Cheptil beat hosts Kisumu Polytechnic 3-0.
