It is said age is nothing but a number and true to the words, 12 year-old Kavi ‘Batuk’ Shah stunned a field of 112 participants to win the Heritage Insurance Golf Day at Eldoret Golf Club.
The youngster, playing off handicap 27, was in a class of his own as he carded an impressive 44 Stableford points made up of 23 and 21 points in each nine to beat seasoned golfers from Western, Nyanza and Rift Valley clubs at the nine-hole course.
He beat his closest challenger, handicap three Emmanuel Omonya of Kitale Golf Club, by three shots.
"It feels great after playing second fiddle in a couple of tournaments," said the Form One student at Gulab Lochab Academy, Eldoret. " I had perfect drives and an average short game," he added.
Omonya settled for the runners-up prize on 41 points, while handicap 19 Geoffery Kitiwa was third on 39 points (16,23) after beating Vandeep Sagoo (18,21) and Rahil Patel (18,21) on three-way countback of 39 points.
Staff prize
Heritage Insurance Executive Director, Joseph Kyungu, who is also a member of Royal Nairobi Golf Club, won the staff prize on 38 points (18, 20).
At Windsor Golf and Country Club, home golfer Hardeep Sound won the seventh edition of the Bomb Blast Memorial Park Golf day at the weekend.
Sound, playing off handicap 15, beat 160 golfers who entered the event to raise funds for the August 7 Memorial Trust, a non-profit making organisation that owns and manages the Seventh Memorial Park.
Peace building
The funds raised at the event will be spent on peace building and reconciliation activities and in the running of the Memorial Park.
Meanwhile, four junior golfers from Nyali Golf Club booked tickets to the national finals of the South African Golf Series set for Muthaiga Golf Club in January, after the qualifiers at the Coast at the weekend.
Eighteen year-old international George Munyao led the lot with a 38-point performance that also saw him win Division A of the competition. The others were 15-year old handicap nine, Said Hamada, who carded 36 points, handicap three Abdulragman Sihag on 35 points and Aaron Kikuvi, who also posted 35 points.
The only lady to qualify from the region was Fareeda Saeed, who lost on countback to division C winner, Kirti Chauhan, with 34 points.
