No league in South Nyanza for two years

In southern Nyanza, football has been reduced to locally organised tournaments.

For the past two years, there has been no organised league either by the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) or by the Football Kenya Limited. Clubs in the region rely on invites from organisers of individual tournaments.

Migori Youth captain Dan Makori says it was their only chance of making sure the game remains alive in the region. "We don’t know the fate of the local leagues for we are waiting to see if there will be any this year," Makori told FeverPitch.

Migori Youth featured in the Nationwide League two years ago, the last time the provincial league was held in the region.

Provincial league

"We were able to win the provincial league in which we featured alongside the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) leaders Sofapaka," Wilson Aol, Migori Youths goalkeeper, said.

Tusker and Harambee Stars’ defender Joackins Atudo is among players ho have featured for the team. Runners-up at the provincial league, Isebania KRA, got an opportunity to participate in the Presidents Cup last year but, sadly, did not.

Peris Aduda, women’s football representative (FKL) in Nyanza says lack of regular leagues in the area was affecting development of the game.

"No league is going on," Aduda said. She was, however, optimistic district and provincial leagues would resume soon. The area covers more than ten districts — Rongo, Uriri, Migori, Nyatike, Kuria East, Kuria West, Homa Bay, Mbita, Suba, Rachuonyo East and Rachuonyo west.

Sony Sugar are the only club from the area in the KPL.
