Kenya Hockey Union (KHU) Secretary General, Peter Kiruma, and two union members, Avtar Sohal Singh and Martin Milla, have been suspended.

Vivian Agunda replaces Kiruma in acting capacity. Addressing the Press at City Park Stadium yesterday, KHU chairman, Resham Bains, said the three were suspended for alleged misappropriation of funds and inefficiency in management.

Bains said Milla misappropriated the federation’s funds and was notorious for not attending meetings, while Sohal was said to have absconded meetings frequently.

Contacted, Kiruma accused KHU of playing politics. He said the union’s vice-chairman Nahashon Randiek had a hidden agenda in the matter.

Never forgiven

"You see he has never forgiven us for flooring him in the 2004 elections where I comfortably won," said Kiruma.

He accused Bains and Randiek of insinuation since the two had vested interests. Kiruma said alcohol addiction should not be brought into the picture by the federation since it was a personal matter.

"If I drink alcohol and perform my duties well what’s wrong with that? This is purely character association and should not be brought into hockey management," he said.

Kiruma has served KHU for more than 11 years and this was his second term as secretary general. He was re-elected in November, last year.

Meanwhile Kenya was yesterday officially granted a chance to host the African Hockey Championship following Uganda’s withdrawal due to lack of funds.

Won gold

Kenya will host the event between December 12 and 20. Telekom Orange won gold when the country hosted the championship in 2007.

"The event is of special significance as winners will qualify for the World Club Championship in Spain in 2010," Bains said.

Kenya is also to start preparation for the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore whose qualifying tournament will be held in South Africa later this year.
