President Kibaki has directed the Ministries of Agriculture and Forestry to provide enough seeds ahead of expected heavy rains.
The President said the Government will also provide free seeds and fertilisers to more than 78,000 resource poor farmers.
He said the Government is implementing a comprehensive fertiliser subsidy programme for most crops.
"The the two ministries should then spearhead planting environmental-friendly trees to recover our forest cover," he directed.
He added: "For instance, this season, the price of 50kg bag of DAP has been reduced from Sh2,500 to Sh2,000. Also reduced is the price of CAN from Sh1,750 to Sh1,400."
Food production
In addition to environmental conservation, the President said the Government is promoting the use of fertilisers and quality seeds to boost food production. "I am pleased to note conservation of forests is now well appreciated in this province. Many people have voluntarily started cutting down eucalyptus trees to conserve water.
"I urge all Kenyans to work with the Government and plant trees, which consume less water and help conserve the environment," he said.
The President was speaking yesterday, while opening the ASK Nyeri National Show at Kabiru-ini Showground in Nyeri Central District.
