Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka has been challenged to show leadership in Ukambani before seeking the presidency.
Mutito MP Kiema Kilonzo on Monday accused the VP of abdicating his role as the ODM-Kenya party leader and was instead leaning more on PNU political side.
"ODM-K has not met as a party for one year. Today Kalonzo is just campaigning for PNU in seminars and rallies. We cannot let our party die," Kiema said.
Kiema warned that the writing was on the wall if Kalonzo failed to focus on the plight of the poor and issues affecting the community and let Kibaki succession politics take a back seat for a moment.
New alliances
The MP said the VP appeared to mind more about new alliances as the 2012 elections approach with little regard to Kambas’ poor living standards.
The MP spoke as Kalonzo, Prof Philip Kaloki (Kibwezi), Victor Munyaka (Machakos Town), Peter Kiilu (Makueni) were hosted by Johnstone Muthama (Kangundo) to a political meeting with a group of councillors from Ukambani.
MPs Charles Kilonzo (Yatta) and Kiema, however, distanced themselves from the meeting. They claimed they were not invited.
"As leaders in Ukambani, we feel let down by Kalonzo’s aloofness and ineffectiveness in fighting famine and poverty," Kiema said.
"Since the death of Mulu Mutisya Kamba people are leaderless. For the first time Ukambani has no nominated MP after candidates we proposed were sidelined by party owners." Kiema said.
Speaking to The Standard, the ODM-Kenya legislator blamed the VP for apathy in the region.
Wake-up call
"This is a wake-up call for him to either lead in the front or pave way for a dynamic leader. Our people are being sacked yet we have the second most powerful slot in the country," he said.
Kiema said the region was bitter with the way the Mwingi North MP was using the peoples’ support for personal benefit.
"Kalonzo has sidelined ODM-Kenya leaders in Government appointments," the MP said.
He further claimed the VP had ditched his foot soldiers who played crucial roles in his presidential campaigns bid in 2007.
Kiema said he was working with his Yatta counterpart former MPs Mutinda Mutiso and Daudi Mwanzia to rewrite a new political chapter in Ukambani.
The legislator urged Kalonzo to tread carefully with Ukambani politics to avoid embarrassing scenarios in the near future.
