Former President Moi has told Kenyans to brace for food shortages, which could worsen next year.

The former Head of State said wananchi should exercise moderation in the way they use food stocks they may be having in view of the looming food crisis.

Moi later donated maize to Kapkelelwa AIC church in Baringo, where he spoke after attending the Sunday service. The maize will be distributed to starving residents.

Kenya’s former president Daniel Moi: Leaders dishonest on Mau

On matters Mau, the former President accused leaders of dishonesty in the ongoing debate over conservation of the forest.

"It is wrong when leaders choose to be dishonest especially in sensitive matters such as the Mau debate," Moi said yesterday.

The retired president was reacting to sentiments by Government officials, politicians and environmentalists who claim the current draught is due to destruction of the water tower. He called such claims "deceitful".

He made the comments a day after he opposed planned eviction of squatters at the Mau Forest and asked the Government to respect sanctity of title deeds.

Declining water

Speaking after the church service yesterday, the former President wondered whether Mau was also responsible for the declining water of Tana River.

Moi also said the rationing of electricity in the country could not be traced to the Mau complex.
