City institutions shine at Coast music festivals

University of Nairobi choir thrilled the audience with a Daudi Kabaka composition, Msichana wa Elimu, during the music festivals in Mombasa.
They went on to win first position in the Zilizopendwa category in this year’s edition of Kenya National Music Festivals, which close today with gala performances.
The university choir, trained by Mr Chris Wakulo broke into song and dance outside the Aga Khan Academy auditorium after they were announced winners.
"We trained hard and deserved to win," an ecstatic Wakulo told The Standard.
Second in the same category of Class 695 was Masinde Muliro University College with The Maroon Commandos popular Charonyi ni Wasi.
Mombasa Polytechnic University College settled for third position with Nampenda Mpenzi Wangu Katu Simwachi by Safari Sounds.
Elsewhere, in what turned out to be a close set piece contest, Nairobi Aviation College beat a strong field of 22 entrants.
They amassed 90 points ahead of Kagumo Teachers Training College who came in second with 87 points.
Mombasa Aviation Training College, Machakos, and Thogoto teachers colleges tied on third position with 86 points.
It’s unfair
Meanwhile, a cross-section of teachers protested at the events’ organisers after one of the adjudicators participated in the competition.
"This is unfair and we demand that if an individual is adjudicating, he or she should concentrate on that role," a teacher from Nyanza said.
The teacher alleged that in such a scenario, there cannot be fairness in judgment.
