Children from many parts of Kenya made their way to the Carnivore grounds in Nairobi last week to attend the Undaground Festival, organised by The Standard Group and other partners.
At the colourful event, children also celebrated Generation Next’s first birthday. One of them was 10-year-old Victor Kipkoech Lang’at, who came all the way from Bomet. Victor is one of the many pupils who write for the magazine.
"I came to the party with my father, Mr Joseph Lang’at. I enjoyed the children’s activities, including a dancing competition and cutting and sharing the beautiful and tasty cake. I also met the editors and writers of the magazine. I enjoy writing and drawing so I am always happy because I know other children in Kenya read my stories," said Victor, a pupil at Dr Steury Memorial Primary School, Bomet.
Another happy child was Sheina Waruinu, who celebrated her fifth birthday with Generation Next fans. Dressed in a Maasai outfit, she made other children and adults happy when she performed a Maasai dance on stage before she and others cut the cake.
"I jumped up and down like a Maasai dancer and I am happy," she told Generation Next.
Viraj Shah, 12, enjoyed the exciting outing. "I walked around looking at the beautiful cars, eating good food and listening to the music," the pupil at Oshwal Academy said.
Children from Shangilia Mtoto wa Africa were at the party as well. They sang and danced.
Wearing Generation Next T-shirts they sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to the magazine that turned one since it was first published.
"The cake was tasty and it was really good serving enthusiastic adults as well as other children. I felt part of the team and wish Generation Next a long life!" said nine-year-old Benson Thuo.
