The saga surrounding Catholic Priest Fr Renato Kizito Sesana took a new twist Wednesday when three of the boys who accused him of sexual abuse retracted their statements.
The boys went to Kilimani Police Station where they retracted the statements and sought police protection from harassment and threats on their lives.
Its is not clear what drove them to change their earlier statements but police who attended to them said they had been advised to do so.
The boys went to the station at about 8am where they recorded their withdrawal statement with CID officers.
A senior officer at the station confirmed the withdrawal saying they will forward the statements to the officers investigating the case.
The move came a day after police quizzed Kizito for the second day in connection with the saga.
Kizito went to CID headquarters on Monday and Tuesday where he recorded a statement with the detectives denying knowledge of the accusations.
Bad light
A team of detectives at CID headquarters is investigating the case, which put the Catholic Church in bad light.
More than 1,600 cases of defilement were reported to police last year alone but the numbers could be higher because some are unreported.
A group of young boys alleged the priest had sexually abused them during his over 20-year tenure as a charity worker.
Still and video pictures backed allegations by the boys who accused Kizito of lewd acts.
Led by head of the Catholic Church in Kenya John Cardinal Njue, the bishops had issued a joint statement promising to investigate the matter and reach a conclusion.
Kizito, who runs shelter homes in Nairobi, under the name Koinonia, vehemently denied molesting young boys under his care and blamed his former board of trustees of waging a dirty war against him to take over his properties worth Sh3 billion.
