Nepad picks new officials ahead of second Kenyan review

The African Peer Mechanism (APRM) National Council held its first meeting and elected office bearers.

During the session at the office of the Nepad Kenya Secretariat the council elected Sheik Abdullahi, the National Muslim Leaders Forum as chairman, while Prof Winnie Mitulla of the Institute for Development Studies was elected vice chair.

Nepad CEO Grace Ongile briefed members on the status of the APRM process in Kenya, and the upcoming second Country Review.

Dr Graca Machel, a lead panellist and member of the APRM Panel of Eminent Persons, will lead a team of experts on the review.

The council comprises 15 members, among them Standard Group Deputy Chairman and Strategy Adviser Paul Melly who is in the body as a media representative.

Others are House Speaker Kenneth Marende, Dr Wilberforce Wanyanga, Dr Karuti Kanyinga, Sheik Abdullahi Abdi, Prof Edward Oyugi, Dr Reginalda Wanyonyi, Hassan Omar, Ms Tabitha Seii, Mr Ephraim Kariithi Njogu, Ms Caren Wakoli, Mr Sam Kabue, Ms Rukia Subow, Ms Winnie Mitulla and Ms Muthoni Wanyeki.

APRM is a self-monitoring mechanism for member states of the African Union.

It aims to encourage conformity in regard to political, economic and corporate governance values, codes and standards, among African countries and the objectives in socio economic development within new partnership for Africa’s development.

In Kenya, APRM was re-constituted by the Planning Minister to steer the country towards Vision 2030.

The council should to provide leadership, guidance and direction to Kenya’s APRM, including creating awareness and sensitisation among Kenyans.
