Pro-choice activists believe abortion should be legalised to make it safe, protect the lives and health of women, and reduce costs arising from treatment of complications arising from botched abortions.
Ms Carol Osero-Agengo, the executive director of Tomorrow’s Child Initiative, says to come up with clear-cut legislation on abortion people must engage in constructive debate on the subject.
She says reproductive rights must be distinguished from abortion and not be mixed up like it has been done in the proposed Reproductive Health and Rights Bill.
She says the Bill speaks of abortion in a tone similar to that in the Penal Code Cap 163 of the Laws of Kenya.
The Federation of Kenya Women Lawyers (Fida) Centre For Reproductive Rights in the report, Failure to Deliver says a disturbing tendency to use law enforcement and the legal system to harass reproductive health providers, such as through unsubstantiated prosecutions and clinic raids, could discourage medical professionals from providing abortions even when the law permits.
