Glen tops Rhino Charge as Sh65.1m is raised

Rhino Charge, the grueling 4x4 off-road motoring contest that was held at Mogoswok in Baringo District, raised Sh65.1million.

The money from the Charge goes towards fencing of Aberdare Conservation Area and National Park.The innitiative is spearheaded by Rhino Ark Charitable Trust.

Mark Glen, driving car number 48, won the event after scoring a distance of 39.45km and covering 12 Guard Posts. Second overall was Alan Mckittrick in car number five after scoring 40.35km through 12 Guard Posts.

Rally veteran Ian Duncan in car number two finished third after covering the 12 Guard Posts through a long distance of 42.21km.

The McKittrick/Trundell/Hutchinson team won the most prestigious Victor Ludorum trophy — the shortest distance to the highest money raised.

Highest Sponsorship

The highest sponsorship of Sh7,682,461.88 was raised by McKittrick, while the second highest sponsorship came from car number 35 driven by Mark Tillbury, who raised Sh3,316,397.00.

Ben Woodhams, driving car number 39, recorded the third highest sponsorship of Sh2,855,967.31.

Former President Moi who was the chief guest, said: "Kenyans should take conservation efforts seriously so that we can save our rivers and lakes."

He said the future of the country is in conserving the environment and increasing tourism potential.

Host Communities

Host communities at the Mogoswok area will benefit from Sh2.4 million raised from camping and entry fee to the event.

Colin Church, chairman of Rhino Ark Management Committee said: "Rhino Ark policy for all Charges is that the camping fees paid by entrants to the event is donated to the host area communities."

"This year’s total of Sh2.4 million will be donated to the local community and for the education of their children and other development-related projects," he said.
