Collins Injera has refused to be weighed down by not winning the IRB sevens circuit player of the year award, despite being one of the short listed nominees for the coveted prize.
Injera lost to England’s Ollie Phillips who was crowned after guiding his team to two major trophies in the international circuit. The Kenya sevens team winger was nominated along with his brother Humphrey Kayange.
But Injera having scooped the top try scorer trophy after scoring 43 tries, he remains one of the favourites to land the title.
"I think the right man bagged the award and I would like to congratulate him," Injera praised his performance in the concluded circuit,
"We played well as a team and I worked hard to get to where I am at the moment."
The young Mwamba winger seemed to mature as every leg of the circuit went by. He attributed this to confidence as the season went on.
"At the start of the circuit I wasn’t sure of myself but as time passed, I started aiming to be at least number three. By the time we were getting to the end I was confident I would reign supreme."
Injera’s teammate Ben Nyambu praised the winger’s performance and hoped for better things for the speedster.
"We have done well this season and I expect players like Injera and Biko Adema to go to greater heights such as playing in a professional league," he said.
Nyambu said he will be available to turn pro but at the moment he will focus on his home club Nondescripts which he hopes will win the Kenya Cup.
