Kenya ended the London leg of the International Rugby Board sevens series with two points after winning the Bowl trophy in a thrilling final against World Cup champions, Wales.
They claimed the Bowl title after edging out Wales 12-7. Kenya drew first blood with two tries from brothers Collins Injera and Humphrey Kayange to take a commanding 12-0 half time lead.
However, the World Cup champions came out in the second half with daggers drawn and pushed Kenya to the limit, forcing the East Africans to defend with their lives for the better part of the game.
Weles could only conjure a solitary try from Will Harries as Kenyans stood firm and weathered the storm.
Victory
Shujaa had earlier been relegated to the Bowl tournament after failing to qualify for the Main Cup quarter-final in what was termed as the pool of death. Shujaa did not have it easy in the Bowl event either as they had to play Canada, Samoa and Wales.
Captain Kayange praised the victory but rued the fact that they missed out on the Main Cup trophy. "We wanted to play in the Main Cup, but didn’t so we had to get ourselves up and start all over again," he said.
Injera made good his promise to score a minimum of five tries from the London leg and Kayange was first to congratulate his brother.
"I’m getting envious now, he keeps on scoring all the time but that’s good for him. He’s on fire now and the more he scores the more we appreciate it and the more we win."
Injera looks well on course to finish as the circuit’s top try scorer as he currently holds 35 tries to his name, eight more than second-placed Luke Morahan of Australia.
The two points gained from London leaves Kenya with 60 and still at sixth place, but with an eight-point deficit from fifth-placed Argentina.
South Africa lead the pack with 116 points followed by the London leg hosts and champions England who have 96 points.
Theoretically, only England can catch up with South Africa in the last leg of the circuit in Scotland. However, they have to collect the maximum 20 points by winning the Scotland leg and pray South Africa do not get any from the tournament.
The teams head for Murray field in Scotland for the penultimate leg of the circuit.
