Scores of people were injured in a fight between Maseno University security guards and villagers who had invaded the institution’s farm.

A group of youth and Riley Falcon Ltd security guards fought at the adjacent Kenya Forestry Research Institute offices.

It took the intervention of Maseno DO David Kirui and armed police officers to restore order.

Trouble started when the youth invaded the farm and started cutting grass for their cattle.

They were confronted by the guards who beat them and threw them out of the farm.

"We wonder why the university does not allow us to cut grass from this land," said Mr Johnstone Ambita.

But the DO said the farm was private property. He told the youth to keep off and warned that those who destroyed the fence to gain entrance would be arrested and charged in court.

Meanwhile, a fishing expedition turned tragic after a man drowned on Remba Island, Suba District.

Nyanza PPO Anthony Kibuchi said the deceased was among four fishermen who had gone fishing in Lake Victoria.

Mr Kibuchi said the boat capsized after it collided with another.

"The boat sank, leaving one person dead," said the PPO.

He said the other three fishermen swam to safety, but that the deceased was overwhelmed by the swift currents.

The incident occurred yesterday morning. The PPO said the rescue team, however, retrieved the body at 8am, and took it to Homa Bay District Hospital mortuary.
