Kenyans at home and abroad have reacted with awe at the revelation of exploits by Mungiki gangs and brutal violence of vigilante groups who have turned on the gangsters.
An investigative series in ‘The Standard’ since Monday has brought out untold details of Mungiki operations and the ruthless execution of gang members in Kirinyaga at a place nicknamed ‘The Hague’.
Johnny Baraza, Algeria: "The Hague in Kenya? You are kidding me. This is a sad story. I can’t imagine this happening in Kenya. The same people at this ‘Hague’ are the same Mungiki killing their own for leaking information. By not forgiving the boys (three school boys who were killed at ‘The Hague’) ,they were afraid of being exposed."
Waititu wa Wangui, US: "This is the saddest story I’ve ever read. How can a father be put through this for God’s sake?" (In reference to a father who witnessed vigilantes kill his son on suspicion he was a Mungiki member.
Mondi, US: "What is the difference between the vigilante groups and Mungiki? If the medicine is as bad as the disease, what good does it do?
Charles, US: "Now what is all this madness? What has become of us Kenyans? Are we haunted or what could be happening? I think we need divine intervention if such evil is to ever leave our society."
Wesley, Australia: "Is this for real? My heart cannot take this."
Benard Weda, Portugal: "I congratulate ‘The Standard’ for such in depth investigation. The police should follow the leads and arrest the criminals."
F. Ochieng’-Odhiambo, Barbados: "When high ranking Government officials and MPs read such stories, aren’t they moved into thinking how the menace can be brought to a halt?"
George Mwaura, UK: "I feel ashamed to answer to the title ‘Kenyan’ from my neighbours when they show me articles such as these ones. Who in God’s name is in charge of a country which we are proud to call home?"
More Kenyans sent their sympathies to a man who was reported to have watched as vigilantes killed his son.
Kenyambi Magare, Sudan: "Pole sana mzee!" That is the most painful experience a parent can go through. It is unbearable.
Simon, Angola: "Mungiki are just idiots. How long did they expect to continue without people getting tired?"
But some supported the execution of Mungiki suspects by vigilante groups.
Edwin Cweya, Kenya: "If those executed at ‘The Hague’ are Mungiki adherents, this is the only option to wipe out the gang. Since the vigilantes are at the grassroots, I doubt they can execute innocent people because Mungiki are known."
Liz Ciru, Kenya: "We need prayers, prayers and more prayers.
