Readers fall for Artur brothers’ hoax

An April Fool’s Day hoax by The Standard that the Artur brothers were back in town was greeted with horror and awe as readers fell for the prank.

In yesterday’s paper, we published a story saying the infamous Armenians had jetted into the country aboard a chartered jet from Dubai.

The pompous duo had come to launch a book, The Artur Ex-Files, and expose names of powerful people who offered them safe haven a few years ago.

And as expected, the story elicited outrage from readers who were unaware that it was a hoax. Many readers called The Standard Group switchboard enquiring about the book launch.

"My colleague and I want to attend the book launch. Where is it being held? It is unbelievable that the Government can allow the hooligans back into our country. I’m very shocked," raged one caller.

And true to the spirit of the day, the Standard Group staff directed the callers to the Illusion Hall at the KICC.

The sports section (Feverpitch) fooled soccer fans with a story that Mathare United players who had been axed from Harambee Stars would not be included in the national team until after 2010.
