Microsoft’s Sh11m grant targets youth

Microsoft Corporation has given a Sh11 million grant to three organisations to train youths and women in ICT. The project aims to create jobs in the war against poverty.

The funds will be used to encourage use of modern technologies among the youth and women in rural areas to apply ICT in their entrepreneurship skills, and hopefully generate employment in villages.

Among the organisations that have benefited include the Ugunja community Resource Center from Ugenya District, the African Center for Women in ICT and the Informal Sector Business Institute, which is focusing on the Jua-Kali sector.

In Siaya and Ugenya Districts, more than 300 people have gone through the training for the last three years through UCRC programmes.

Microsoft East and Southern Africa General Manager Luis Otieno said they were committed to give more grants to help young farmers benefit from information and communication technology that is affordable and relevant to their needs in commercial crop production and market for their produce.

He was speaking at Ugunja in Ugenya District during the graduation ceremony of more than 500 people who completed a free ICT training.
