Coast swimmers masters of long course swimming

Swimmers from Coast Province proved masters of long course swimming, winning most events at Kenya Swimming Federation Championships.

International Silvia Brunlehner sent signals of excelling in the Championships after she won three gold medals out of the same events at Kasarani yesterday.

The lanky swimmer from Mombasa Academy won 100m freestyle in 1:07.15, with Lisa Kopsieker of Hillcrest finishing second in 1:08.87 and Anham Salyani of Aga Khan Mombasa third in 1:10.28.

She bagged her second gold when she won 400m freestyle in 5:13.04 as Hanika Patel of Imani School Thika, who is another swimmer with international reputation, got silver in 5:40.73 and Jayni Haria of Oshwal Academy Nairobi bagged bronze in 5:52.03.

Brunlehner proved the queen of long course when she won 1,500m freestyle in 21:37.73 followed by Haria who clocked 23:23.47.

Brunlehner is one of the most experienced swimmers at the championships, having represented Kenya in major international events including African Championships.

Soraya Oruya of Brookhouse continued to dominate girls 12-13 age group when she won 100m freestyle in 1:10.17.

Marina Rozanski of Kenton (1:13.13) and teammate Sehar Saleh (1:14.52) came third and second. Akinyi Ogot of Otter was the luminary in girls 10-11 100m freestyle, winning the event in 1:22.25. Alesa Ilako, who is also from Otter, returned 1:24.59 to bag silver with bronze going to Anita Field of Braeside who clocked 1:24.67.

Like in the girls’ category, boys from Coast Province ruled marathon events as Mahamoud Soud of Mombasa Academy won 400m freestyle in 5:18.71. Oshwal Academy Nairobi’s Purav Patel (5:30.24) and Ivo Nanev of St Austin’s Academy (5:30.45) got silver and bronze.

Inland swimmers also chased shadows in boys 400m individual medley won by Raj Shah of Oshwal Academy Mombasa in 6:02.73.

Anham Salyani of Aga Khan Academy Mombasa was the only swimmer to attain qualifying time in girls’ 400m individual medley in a time of 5:40.73. Stephanie Mwaura of Kenyatta University was time-barred after she recorded 8:10.75.
