Nairobi Swimming Association (Nasa) has unveiled plans to develop a standing team for future events.
Competitions secretary Andrew Nderu said the idea is aimed at ending the tradition of holding trials to select swimmers for competitions.
He said the squad of at least 32 swimmers would train around the clock under a panel of coaches.
"The main purpose of the planned structure is to make it easier to select swimmers for competitions," Nderu said. "This would also help to closely monitor the form of the swimmers and what they do," he said.
Top meet
The official said members of the team would be announced after the Barclays Bank triple ‘A’ gala starting at Aga Khan High School tomorrow.
The Aga Khan event is Nasa’s top meet and would culminate in the selection of swimmers to represent the provincial body in invitational championships in South Africa in March. The level two gala is scheduled for March 18-23 in East London with Cape Town hosting level one event from March 25-30.
Nderu said all elite swimmers are expected to feature in the two-day gala. They include Martha Opiyo, Talissa Lanoe, Joshua Oruya and Kiptolo Boit.
"The coming gala is the culmination of all the selection rounds and so we expect the top talent to be on show at Aga Khan this weekend," Nderu said.
