State orders IDPs camping at DC’s office dispersed
By Steve Mkawale
The Government has ordered displaced people camping outside the Nakuru DC’s office to leave or be dispersed.
Acting Nakuru DC Alex ole Nkoyo said they have discovered that some of 200 integrated IDPs had been paid Sh10,000 to facilitate their resettlement.
"We have established that some of them were paid as they left camps in Molo and are now masquerading as integrated IDPs," he said.
Mr Nkoyo said plans to pay the integrated IDPs were underway, but warned them that the payments would only be done when they returned to their home districts.
"The respective DCs have sent the records to the IDP resettlement board and the money will be channelled to those offices and not here in Nakuru," Nkoyo said.
For the past three weeks the IDPs, among them women and children, have been camping at Nyayo Gardens next to the DC’s office to press the Government to compensate them for the loss they incurred during post-election violence early last year.
The displaced families depend on well-wishers and relatives for food and other needs. They vowed not to leave until their demands were met.
"Where will we go? Our houses were torched and property looted during the violence. We have no money for fare," said Joseph Mwangi, their spokesman.
He said the Government was trying to absond from its responsibility by dismissing them as bogus.
